「宿題が多いのでﾃﾚﾋﾞを見る気がしない」このような文章は「宿題が多い」と「ﾃﾚﾋﾞを見る気がしない」と2文に分けることができます。
そして2つの文は前半の節が後半の節に対する理由を示しています。この理由を示す「〜ので」の部分を英語では as という単語で表現できます。
すると次のような文になります。
As I have a lot of homework to do, I feel like going to watch TV.
この As I have の部分を Having に置き換えることができます。このように接続詞と主語、動詞を含む部分を現在分詞や過去分詞で代用した構文を分詞構文といいます。
但し、分詞構文は文書的表現であり日常会話ではそれほど使われませんので会話における乱用は禁物です。
原因・理由
As he wasted of enormous money, he couldn't pay all his debts.
→Wasting of enormous money, he couldn't pay all his debts.
彼は莫大な金を浪費したので、借金を全額返せなかった。
Because he was born in Hong Kong, he can speak both English and Cantonese.

彼は香港で生まれたので英語と広東語の両方を喋れる。
受身形の場合は been born となりますが been は省略されます。
譲歩
Though I spoke to the girl standing over there in English, she ignored me.
→Speaking to the girl standing over there in English, she ignored me.
向こうに立っている女の子に話しかけたが、彼女は私を無視した。

付帯状況
She had watched TV, while she had made a long phone call with her friend.
She had watched TV, having made a long phone call with her friend.
彼女は友達と長電話をしながらﾃﾚﾋﾞを見ていた。
完了形の場合は having + 過去分詞の形をとります。
接続
I recieved a parcel, and I opened it.
I recieved a parcel, openning it.
私は小包を受け取るなりすぐに中身を開けた。
慣用表現
分詞構文の形になっている熟語として使われているﾌﾚｰｽﾞがいくつかあります。次の表現はまとめて覚えておきましょう。
according to 〜 → 「〜によると」

今朝の新聞によれば殺人犯は深夜に逮捕されたようだ。
Judging from 〜 → 「〜から判断すると」

generally speaking → 「一般的に言うと」

一般的言うと女性の方が男性より長生きする。
frankly speaking → 「率直に言えば」
Frankly speaking, I think his remark isn't logical.
率直に言って彼の発言は筋が通っていないと思う。
talking of 〜 → 「〜のことと言えば」

映画監督と言えば私はｼﾞｮﾝ・ｳｰを賞賛する。
